Camp vs. Combines
A lot of parents ask me about attending combines...should my son/daughter attend? Is it good for exposure? Is it worth it?

Today, I want to share with you my opinion about combines, and the power of having a CAMP STRATEGY for college recruiting! For the most part combines are an opportunity for a company or organization to make money. The main benefit of attending a combine is that (assuming it is a well run combine) you can get some accurate athletic test scores, i.e. 40yd dash time, vertical, etc. Rarely do coaches attend combines, and for some sports the NCAA has prohibited coaches from attending "combines."
The drawback to combines is that if you go to one, and you post a POOR score on the tests you may actually be doing more harm than good for your recruiting efforts. So in my opinion, if you are like most families and you have limited resources and time, the best way to MAXIMIZE your resources is to attend a CAMP on campus.
Now, I am not suggesting just any camp! The key to YOUR CAMP RECRUITING STRATEGY is:
1. Attend a school's camp that is ACTIVELY recruiting you. For example, if you are a football player, and a school calls you this April/May, then you know they are actively recruiting you. This camp will be an OUTSTANDING use of your parent's resources.
2. Do NOT attend a camp where the coach/school only sends you "Come to our camp" materials. If the coach/school has not sent you any previous recruiting information (ie. questionnaire, letters, emails, etc.), then they are probably asking you to attend their camp to help line their pocketbooks. Camps can be a GREAT way for a coach to increase revenue for their sports program and their personal pocketbooks.
The key thing to a summer of successful camps is to have a strategy! Attend camps where you are being actively recruited, and you have a chance to earn a scholarship at the school.
If you have any questions or comments about camps, please, be sure to post them in the COMMENTS section below, and I will be more than happy to answer your questions.

Interview with a Parent of a Recruited Student-Athlete
On the Coach Chris Radio Show, I interviewed a parent of a student-athlete that has gone through the recruiting process. I want to share this interview with you because I know parents of a recruited athlete bump up against a lot of the same challenges in the recruiting process.
I hope that Danielle Arriola's story can help you avoid some common mistakes, and empower you to help your son/daughter make the BEST college decision for them. Click the PLAY button below to listen to the interview:
The key in the recruiting process is NATIONAL EXPOSURE! It is important that you are PRO-ACTIVE in your college recruiting process, and you do not leave it entirely up to your coach or cross your fingers and HOPE colleges will find you.
If you have any questions about how to become more PRO-ACTIVE for your son/daughter, please, feel free to contact me.
Coach Chris Berg, wishing you happy recruiting trails!
